A New Adventure
(St. Anthony School-wide 4th Qtr Project)
Project Description
Our vision is to empower students to become independent readers and thinkers. We want to encourage both written and spoken communication that will lead to higher levels of comprehension and performance. We know, based on our Faith, that each child is a unique individual who learns in his or her own way. Our goal is to embrace that ideal more fervently.
Utilizing Multiple Intelligences will allow students to be educated in the way they learn best. We plan to offer students choices and variety in learning the content in ways that suit them best.
Project-based learning provides students with complex tasks based on challenging questions or problems that involve the students' problem solving, decision-making, investigative skills, and reflection. Such a process includes teacher facilitation, but not direction. In this way, students are challenged to dig deeply into topics that interest them.
Technology is the tool that may open doors to many options for both our students and our staff. By helping us gather data, communicate ideas more effectively and analyzing how we can better serve each other, technology will help us go further. We will incorporate iPads and online web tools to enhance learning.
This is a new adventure for us as we have traditionally engaged in whole class instruction and activities. Curriculum across the United States is changing to meet the needs of 21st century learning. With the implementation of the Common Core Standards (a course of study that leads to literacy, inquiry, creativity, and critical thinking) this fall, in our state and in our diocese, we are finding it necessary to change how we teach children.
Benefits to Students
We have 140 students this school year (2011-12). Students will be learning through a combination of the multiple intelligences, project-based learning, and technology. Students will:
- Manage their own learning by being allowed to choose topics interesting to them and study that topic in a way that suits their intelligence strength.
- Value their individual strength by developing and understanding how they are smart rather than how smart they are.
- Have a deeper understanding of content by being allowed the time and experiences to delve deeper into a topic than is possible with whole class instruction.
- Develop personal and social responsibility by working and collaborating with other students.
- Develop strong communication skills through presentations and research.
- Know how and when to use technology and to choose the most appropriate web tool for the task.
Our project will benefit other students by:
- Giving them the skills to work collaboratively.
- Developing the foundation of how they can effectively work with others as they become adults.
Our project will benefit teachers by:
- The exchanging of ideas by working across curriculum areas and with subject area experts.
- Providing an opportunity to learn more about their students as individuals.
- Providing opportunities for and a wider variety of assessments.
Our project will benefit our parents and community by:
- Strengthening communication between home and school through the use of assessments that are geared for the individual child.
- Tapping community members who are experts in their fields to work with students on specific topics.
- Creating life-long learners.
We will be incorporating professional development on the best ways to assess students. We will be exploring and utilizing the following to evaluate the effectiveness of our project:
- Surveys
- Authentic Assessments
- Formative Assessments
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
